China-U.S. Trade Soars—So Does the U.S. Trade Deficit, Despite Tariffs

China’s total trade in 2021 set a new record of $6 trillion, despite the pandemic. Trade with the U.S. also soared, up 28.7% to $755 billion, despite the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration as part of the attacks on China, leading some Chinese analysts to say, “It’s time to lift the tariffs.”

The U.S. trade deficit with China for 2021 was $396 billion, which is higher than the largest deficit before the trade war, of $323 billion.
