The 18,000 spectators at the hockey match between the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins were no doubt surprised to hear announced toward the end of the game that they would be treated to some remarks from Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang, for the coming Chinese New Year. Speaking on the huge video screen, Ambassador Qin thanked the players for making today a great day. “People love ice hockey because of its speed and skills. Hockey players have fire in their hearts and ice in their veins. People love it also because it reflects the sportsmanship of mutual respect, fair play and tenacity,” he said.
The ambassador said he wanted to bring attention to the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics, where China would be using the most advanced ice-making techniques with the least carbon emissions. And he hoped for many goals for both the U.S. and the Chinese teams. He also called attention to the way hockey players always employ face masks, and he encouraged people in this age of COVID to follow suit and also wear their face masks.
