Haiti Struck by Two Earthquakes Jan. 24, Still Recovering From the One August, 2021

Haiti was struck by two back-to-back earthquakes on the morning of Jan. 24, one measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, and the second 5.1, which were followed by up to 30 aftershocks in the course of the day. Two people are dead, 52 injured and hundreds homeless, with hundreds of buildings and homes damaged or destroyed. The quakes’ epicenter was in the southern Tiburon peninsula, near Les Cayes in the department of Nippes close to where the Aug. 14, 2021 earthquake hit. The quakes occurred in the midst of continued turmoil in the country, marked by political strife, an ongoing security crisis in which armed gangs operate with impunity, and a COVID-19 pandemic characterized by a lack of testing, a very low vaccination rate and a collapsed healthcare system.
