News Agencies Attacked in Almaty– Signs of Protest? Or Coup Attempts

The import of rioters targeting and burning news agencies in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was highlighted by a statement of Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, yesterday. It described organized attacks in Kazakhstan on media, highlighting the complete lack of interest and concern by the OSCE’s Freedom of the Media office. On Jan. 5, a large group of up to 500 invaded Russia’s “Mir” TV broadcast office in the major city, Almaty, armed with axes, gas cutting-torches and Molotov cocktails. They methodically destroyed everything—working desks, telecommunications equipment, heating systems. They “acted in accordance with a plan, were well prepared and organized.” They finished by burning the facility to the ground.
