Lafontaine: Europe Now Needs Politicians Like DeGaulle and Willy Brandt

As the German Chancellor arrived in Moscow for talks there today, former senior Social Democrat Oskar Lafontaine, who became co-founder in 2004 of the Linke party, told German press agency DPA this morning: “The West must become a Putin understander, otherwise there will be no peace.... The West must learn that you have to give your counterpart the same rights that you claim for yourself.” And: “If you want to be capable of peace, you have to understand the other.” The current western policy, however, is based on “lies” and an anti-Russian propaganda campaign that is destabilizing peace.

Lafontaine said that the escalation of the Ukrainian situation is highly dangerous and might still develop into a real war between the “three imperial powers” (in his view these are the USA, Russia, and China), which would not be in the interest of Germany, nor of Europe.
