Truckers’ protests against gasoline prices are exploding in Italy. Yesterday, the port of Ravenna was blocked, some roads in Apulia, as well highways and internal roads in Campania and Calabria are in total chaos. A general unrest is invading the whole country. An EIR source in Palermo, Sicily, said he found neither fruit nor vegetables yesterday in supermarkets. Only “some not so ripe fruit at a street vendor.”
Pasta producer La Molisana, a major Italian brand, announced that they suspended production in solidarity with truckers. Another pasta producer, Divella, said they are forced to stop production not only because of the truckers’ strike but also because wheat from Ukraine is not coming now due to naval blockade in the Black Sea. Their supply ship was turned back, and they will be forced to cut pasta production. They can seek wheat from elsewhere, but it is in short supply on world markets.
With a full tank now at €1200, truckers say it is not profitable to drive, better turn engines off.
