The European Parliament yesterday held a Nuremberg Rally in favor of the Ukrainian government, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking by video and getting a standing ovation. The Parliament voted up a resolution urging the EU Commission and the EU Council to immediately start procedures for Ukraine’s admission into the EU. The document also stated: “The European Parliament calls, in particular, for the import of the most important Russian export goods, including oil and gas, to be restricted.” It also calls “for EU ports to be closed to Russian ships” and “for access to all EU ports to be refused for ships whose last or next port of call is in the Russian Federation, except in the case of necessary justified humanitarian reasons.”
During the debate, MEP Manu Pineda, a Spanish Communist Party member elected to office with Podemos, spoke against the resolution. He heavily criticized the double standard of Western countries, referring to the fact that no sanctions were introduced when the United States and the United Kingdom invaded Iraq and Libya.
