NATO’s foreign ministers met in emergency session in Brussels today, in which the foreign ministers of Sweden, Finland and Ukraine, along with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also participated. Following this, there was a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, with U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken attending personally. After today’s meetings, Blinken travels on to Poland, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to continue “extensive consultations” with allies on Russia’s “premeditated, unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine,” as described by the State Department.
There was also a meeting today in New York of the UN Security Council, with Ukraine as the topic.
In Brussels, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after the NATO meeting, “Russia is carrying out a brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which NATO, and the whole world, condemn. The days to come are likely to be worse.” He continued, “with more death, more suffering, and more destruction, as the Russian armed forces bring in heavier weaponry and continue their attacks across the country.”
“NATO Allies have stepped up support for Ukraine, helping to uphold the country’s right of self-defense, as enshrined in the UN Charter,” Stoltenberg went on. “Today, ministers addressed our immediate response to the crisis, and the longer-term implications for Euro-Atlantic security.”
