Switzerland Throws Two Centuries of Neutrality into the Garbage

On Feb. 28, the Swiss government (Bundesrat) adopted the EU sanctions against Russia.

A Swiss contact provided us with the following message: “I (and I am sure many other readers) wonder what unfair and extortionate means of pressure Brussels has used to make the government in Bern abandon its sacred cow, neutrality, and join the illegal sanctions against Russia, although it did not intend to do so in the beginning.

“It would be very nice if an ‘enlightening’ article on this would also appear in the next Strategic Alert.

“In the whole affair, scandal follows scandal from the Western side, and morality falls completely by the wayside.”

Swiss author Christian Müller wrote on NachDenkSeiten: “On Feb. 28, 2022, the seven members of the Swiss government—the Federal Council, as the government is called in Switzerland—managed to be listed by name in the Swiss history books of the future: They buried Switzerland’s 173-year-old constitutional neutrality and liquidated Geneva as a highly regarded international political conference venue. … I am a trained historian and have closely followed the West-East conflicts of the last 30 years as a journalist. In Bern, this was obviously not done. Today I am ashamed of my red passport.”
