A column of truckers blocked the A1 highway between Naples and Rome this morning, starting to implement the lockout decided by Trasportounito trade union. The A1 highway is the backbone of Italy’s road transport infrastructure, connecting agricultural regions in Southern Italy with all major population centers in the center and in the north (Naples, Rome, Florence, Bologna and Milan). Truckers protest against the unsustainable price of diesel fuel, which costs on average €2.3/liter and make any transport activity unprofitable.
After a few hours, truckers ended the blockade, but a larger mobilization could start tomorrow, if a meeting between government and the largest national union, Unatrans, fails to achieve a result.
