Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and her Swedish counterpart, Magdalena Andersson, have been in Berlin for the past two days for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In her comments, Marin said that the timing of the meeting was “perfect,” as Finland and Sweden are making significant decisions regarding their security policy. Marin said the discussions had been confidential and unique, reported Yle News. “We share the same security environment, and our choices are interdependent,” Marin said. “The Russian attack has completely changed the security environment,” she remarked. “There is no going back.” Officially, Marin’s Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) has not announced its position on NATO membership but Marin’s remarks clearly indicate that as far as she is concerned, her party will support NATO membership.
Scholz said that Germany would support Finland and Sweden if they decided to join the alliance. “If these two countries decide they should join the NATO alliance then they can count on our support,” Scholz said after hosting the Swedish and Finnish leaders.
