Mexican President Lopez-Obrador announced on Tuesday that he will ask President Biden at their meeting in July to review the case of Julian Assange. “I am aware that this review goes against the harsh hardliners that exist in the United States…but humanism must prevail,” he said. Lopez-Obrador did not hide his feelings for the work of Assange, saying that he believes Assange is the best journalist of our time in the world, and that “he has been very unfairly treated, worse than a criminal. The treatment he has received is a disgrace to the world.” He continued, “What about liberties? Are we going to remove the Statue of Liberty in New York? Are we going to continue talking about democracy? Are we going to continue talking about the protection of human rights, of freedom of speech?”
