During the first day of its June 23-24 summit in Brussels, the European Union Council voted up a resolution yesterday charging that “by weaponizing food in its war against Ukraine,” Russia is “solely responsible for the global food security crisis it has provoked.” The resolution also repeats the lie that Russia is “targeting agricultural facilities and removing cereals,” and demands that it “unblock the Black Sea, in particular the port of Odessa, so as to allow the export of grain and commercial shipping operations.”
Aside from the resolution, it was clear that the EU summit was not all sweetness and light, however. The fact that Ukraine and Moldova were fast-tracked into being granted candidate status angered several of the Western Balkan nations that have been waiting for years for similar status but were shunted aside. The EU, in fact, had to hold a special EU-Balkan summit yesterday to address the complaints of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia, at which nothing was resolved and no one’s anger was assuaged. The EU demands that these nations carry out deep economic reforms (austerity) before they can become eligible.
