European Parliament Tramps into the Taiwan Issue

The European Parliament passed a resolution offered by German MEP David McAllister [sic] which expresses concern over China’s “threats” to Taiwan’s security in the Indo-Pacific region. In addition, the CDU member’s resolution calls for the EU to “to prepare a strategy based on realities on the ground that would allow it [the EU] to react if need be.” The resolution recognized Taiwan as “a key partner and democratic ally in the Indo-Pacific,” and called for the EU to enhance its existing partnership with Taiwan to promote common values such as democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and good governance in the region. It also insists China end its threatening actions against Taiwan sovereignty. The vote was 474-60 with 80 abstentions. McAllister, born in Berlin, is the son of a Scottish soldier and a German mother, and according to his bio was educated in Germany, which he himself said was “very British.” Though married in a kilt, McAllister is former CDU Minister President of Lower Saxony.
