Nearly Two-Thirds of Germans See Nuclear Power as Means to Escape Winter Energy Crisis

An opinion poll carried out by the Infratest Institute for the German national TV monthly Deutschlandtrend showed 61% are in favor of keeping nuclear power plants open beyond their planned final shutdown at the end of 2022. Only 32% stick to the shutdown schedule. Among men, 67% are for nuclear, among women 55%.

Whereas this is a clear vote for nuclear power at least for a transition period, the government is determined to neglect the obvious and stick to the deadly schedule for shutting downnuclear power. There is, however, some momentum inside the Free Democrats, one of the three government coalition parties, in favor of keeping the remaining three nuclear power plants running beyond the end of 2022.

FDP Finance Minister Christian Lindner said last night in the Maybrit Illner TV talk show: “We must not allow ourselves any taboos.... We all want to import green hydrogen to Germany. I’m also prepared to buy red hydrogen from France, that is, hydrogen made with nuclear energy.” Then the finance minister revealed: “I would also be ready for a discussion to continue using the remaining nuclear power plants in Germany for a while, to use everything to reduce prices” of energy and other inflationary processes.
