At 7:16 p.m. on July 14, a half-hour before Italian President Sergio Mattarella rejected Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s resignation, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent the following message to a journalist chat: “The Commission never comments on political developments in member states,” but “President von der Leyen has repeatedly stressed the close and constructive collaboration with Premier Mario Draghi.”

More explicit was Italian EU Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni, who said he was “concerned” about the Italian government crisis.

And European Parliament European People’s Party Group [the caucus of Christian Democrats] Chairman Manfred Weber stated that “The EU needs a stable government in Rome"! Weber called the Five Star Movement (M5S) break with Draghi “irresponsible.”
