Harper's Magazine: "The American Century Is Over”

The July issue of Harper’s Magazine, the “monthly magazine of literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts” in publication since 1850, posted a cover story for July: “The American Century Is Over.” This is not news to the readers of EIR, but it is refreshing to see it as the cover of the second-oldest monthly magazine in the U.S. (Scientific American is the oldest).

Their lead article, “Empire Burlesque — What comes after the American Century?” begins by quoting Henry Luce in 1941 declaring the American Century, calling on the U.S. to join the war and “accept wholeheartedly our duty and our opportunity as the most powerful and vital nation in the world and . . . exert upon the world the full impact of our influence, for such purposes as we see fit and by such means as we see fit.” The global hegemon.
