Russia is ready to aid in building a road in Iran to connect with the Persian Gulf, President Vladimir Putin told a press gathering in Tehran following his attendance at the Astana format summit of guarantor countries for peace in Syria, with Iran and Turkey, on July 19. The road would be the Iranian link to the International North-South Transport Corridor between St. Petersburg and India via the Persian Gulf. “Iran is interested in this, and our Iranian partners have just confirmed this. And Russia is interested in this, because from northern Russia, from St. Petersburg, we will have direct access to the Persian Gulf. A very interesting and promising route,” he explained. He added that Azerbaijan was also interested in the project. (http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/69036)
