In the aftermath of challenges to the conduct of the 2020 elections in the United States, numerous absurd claims were promoted, confusing the discussion and delegitimizing legitimate concerns. Among the more wacko claims were that a Chinese firm had purchased Dominion Voting, or that voting systems were being hacked and votes changed via the internet, by Iran.
Is a similar situation going to be promoted around Ray Epps, the man famous for calling, on January 5, for an invasion of the Capitol and who played a significant role on January 6?
After the New York Times wrote a sympathetic story about the only January 6 rioter they love, two very strange claims have emerged:
One, that “FOIA requests” have shown “a dozen phone calls between the cell phone of Ray Epps and the office of Speaker Pelosi in the week before #January6th.” This claim was not only presented without evidence, but is impossible, as the Freedom of Information Act does not apply to the legislative branch.
Second is this claim: “Ray Epps is married to Robyn Epps. She is National Director of Sales and Development at Dominion Enterprises, which Dominion Voting is a division of. Are you still believing there is such a thing as coincidence?” In fact, Dominion Enterprises is not related to Dominion Voting.
Are such transparently false claims spread deliberately to muddy the waters around Epps? Or are they simply the expected sorts of posts from unrigorous people?
In any event, these tweets have been used as the opportunity for an AP “fact check” and for grandstanding by Adam Kinzinger, as quoted by AP: “Take a gander [at the tweets]. Absolutely false, literally made up, yet tens of thousands of RTs. [retweets] This is what democracy is up against.”
The full story of Rap Epps and January 6 must be known.
