In an Aug. 5 video interview with CGTN Español, Argentine Ambassador to Beijing Sabino Vaca Narvaja attacked Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan as a “provocation against China and a problem for the entire international community.” That’s why, he said, “we condemn this visit and want to add our voice to those of Latin America but also of the United Nations,” referencing the fact that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has reiterated that the UN adheres to the One China policy. Vaca Narvaja underscored that Taiwan is a matter “of the identity of the Chinese nation,” just as the Malvinas Islands are an issue of national identity for Argentina, “and we understand the negative impact [Pelosi’s action] has on the building of a more harmonious and balanced international order.”
For this reason, he emphasized, “we always support the One China principle in multilateral organizations [and why] China supports our call for sovereignty over the Malvinas because we are both pursuing the principle of territorial integrity.… That’s why we are acting together. The colonial era is over. We are in the 21st century. We can’t permit colonial enclaves [to exist] in this century and in this sense and in practice, we are brother nations…. Argentina is always going to be on China’s side” in this regard, he said.
