Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui, in an interview with TASS published today, placed the blame for the Ukraine crisis squarely on the shoulders of the United States. “"As the architect and main instigator of the Ukrainian crisis, Washington, while imposing unprecedented comprehensive sanctions on Russia, continues to supply arms and military equipment to Ukraine. Its ultimate aim is to exhaust and ruin Russia with a long war and a sanction stick,” Zhang told TASS. While China clearly has understood all along the nature of the situation in Ukraine, they have usually been much more diplomatic in their public statements. In the same interview the Chinese ambassador also lambasted Pelosi’s Aug. 2-3 visit to Taiwan as “along the U.S. track on reviving the Cold War mentality, containing China and Russia and provoking rivalry and confrontation between major countries.” “They adhere to the Cold War mentality, use the Cold War tools and form groups of the Cold War era.” Ambassador Zhang stated that “Under the strategic direction of Chairman Xi Jinping and President Putin, the Chinese-Russian relations have entered the best period in history….”
