German Government Criminalizes Expected Anti-Inflationary Protests, Echoing ‘Global British’

Referring to unspecified warnings by “security officials,” German Interior Security Minister Nancy Faeser yesterday preemptively warned of radicalized protests against inflationary price increases later this year.

Extremist circles are currently looking for topics that can be used to mobilize the population in their favor, the SPD politician charged. “What has already united right-wing extremists and various other scenes in the coronavirus protests remains the common denominator: contempt for democracy and the attempt to shake confidence in our state,” Faeser said, blaming the drastic increases of energy prices on Russia’s conduct in natural gas. The government’s plan to impose a special flat tax on all energy consumption (which according to Greens’ Economy Minister Robert Habeck will burden each household with up to several hundred euros in addition to the inflationary prices) is blamed on Russia as well. This kind of propaganda will most likely not deter citizens from protesting, however.
