According to mainland media, Taiwan’s Zhongshi Electronic News gives figures on the items that will be under threat because of Chinese countermeasures against Taiwan because of the visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The export of white sand will hit the semiconductor and construction industries hard, according to this source. Imported sand and gravel accounts for 40% of Taiwan’s supply and 90% of that comes from mainland China. China has also stopped the import of citrus fruits, white hairfish, and frozen mackerel. The export of fresh or frozen hairfish to the mainland is nearly 100%, nearly the entirety of Taiwan’s export of that item. China reports that the reason for the stoppage was the discovery of coronavirus on one package of the hairfish and mackerel, but the politics of the matter remain clear.
