One place in Europe where the memories of Queen Elizabeth are far from fond is in the Republic of Cyprus. Memories of the fight for independence from Great Britain in the 1950s are still fresh in the minds of many Cypriots. The British treated the Cypriot independence fighters with the same brutality as they did any of their colonial subjects—they hanged them. The orders for hanging prisoners were signed by the Queen as the head of state. So, when football players and fans were asked to hold a moment of silence upon the news of the Queen’s death, far from being silent, everyone gave out a great cheer.
