Sen. Massimiliano Romeo, whose call for an international security conference was reported in today’s EIR Daily Alert, is not an ordinary senator, but he is the Lega faction leader in Italy’s Senate. Romeo made his statements during the debate on the confidence vote for the new government. Therefore, his statements represent views of the entire Lega, the second largest coalition member in the government. Romeo said that it is not up to Ukraine but to the international community to decide when the war must end.
The Kiev government was not pleased, and spokesman for Zelenskyy’s Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko promptly reacted, being quoted in La Repubblica: “This senator [Romeo] had earlier introduced in Parliament a request for recognizing Crimea as Russian. Almost all countries have politicians who try to please Putin.” Nikolenko said that Kiev relies on new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s declared support for Kiev and added that a “Ukrainian victory” should be in Italy’s interests.
