Nine OAS Member States Did Not Support Resolution Condemning Russia

Yesterday, during the meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Lima, Peru, nine member nations did not vote to approve a resolution presented by Guatemala condemning Russia’s “illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.” Among those not voting were the “big three"—Argentina, Brazil and Mexico—plus Bolivia, Honduras, Dominica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Undoubtedly invited by Secretary of State Tony Blinken, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put in an appearance in the form of a prerecorded message telling members to vote against Russia both at the OAS and also at next week’s emergency UN General Assembly session. He also ordered them not to do business with Russian “individuals or companies,” threatening that those who do so might end up being targeted for international sanctions.
