The Prime Minister of Armenia and President of Azerbaijan met today in Sochi, Russia, in the hope of moving towards a peace deal between them. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin helped to mediate. The two countries have effectively been in a standoff since September 2020. A joint statement was signed at the end of the discussions, which the Russian side seems very optimistic about.
Putin commented: “I must say frankly, not everything was agreed upon. Nonetheless, I agree with the general assessment that the meeting was useful and that creates conditions for further steps toward the settlement of the situation on the whole. We managed to agree then on issues of principal importance. We share the opinion that it was a very useful meeting. In my view, it created a very good atmosphere for possible future agreements on some principal issues.”
