Russia and Egypt Move Closer to Currency Agreements

Cooperation between Egyptian banks and the Russian payment system Mir is moving forward, reported TASS today, citing coverage in the Al-Shorouk newspaper.

Al-Shorouk indicated that “the Mir system and transactions with the Russian ruble in Egyptian banks at tourist resorts can be put in place in coming days.”

On Sept. 13, the Egypt Independent newspaper covered an interview with Yaman al-Hamaki, Professor of Economics at Ain Shams University in Cairo, on a Sept. 12 broadcast of “Hadrat al-Mowaten,” aired on Al-Hadath Al-Youm channel. She indicated that Egypt could begin to move away from the U.S. dollar and begin to incorporate the Russian ruble into its economy.
