A Chinese Perspective on the G20 Summit and Declaration

Although the “G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration” issued on Nov. 16 did mention the Russia-Ukraine situation, Global Times reports that the G20 statement stresses that the focus of the grouping is economic cooperation. The declaration explicitly states that the G20 is “not the forum to resolve security issues.” The nations’ cooperation is “necessary to global economic recovery, to tackle global challenges, and lay a foundation for strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth.”

At the summit, China’s President Xi Jinping said that food and energy security are the most pressing challenges to global development. The root cause of the ongoing crises, he said, is not production or demand, but interrupted supply chains and international cooperation. Unilateral sanctions must be removed, he insisted, as food and energy must not be politicized or used as weapons.
