World Food Program (WFP) director David Beasley warned of the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II in an interview with French daily Le Monde on Nov. 14. Beasley was invited to speak at the Paris Peace Forum on Nov. 11.
Beasley said that “Somalia is at the top of the list of countries knocking on the door of famine. They’ve had no rainy seasons, which has decimated their planting and their yields, and it is suffering from inflationary food pricing, conflict, and climate shocks. We are intervening now with unprecedented aid. Whether we will be able to avert famine is probably unlikely. But we will do everything to reverse this as quickly as possible.
