Biden-Meloni Meeting: the Price of Loyalty

President Joe Biden and the new Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, met on the premises of the G20 in Indonesia. The meeting, which lasted one hour, was expected to be a test for Meloni’s pro-Atlanticist credentials.

After ritual acknowledgments of allegiance to the US and NATO, Meloni told Biden that such loyalty cost Italy a lot in terms of the economic backlash of sanctions and energy prices. Meloni asked Biden for help and Biden promised to supply Italy with more LNG, augmenting US capacities, and convince Japan to divert some of its augmented production to Italy.

Will the US be able to deliver on such promises?
