El Salvador will sign a free trade agreement with China, President Nayib Bukele tweeted on Nov. 9, linking to a statement by a Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson to reporters that bilateral trade between their two countries has grown substantially since the establishment of bilateral relations in 2018, and that now, to further tap the potential of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, China and El Salvador will start the process of negotiating a bilateral free trade agreement as soon as possible.

Speaking the same day, Bukele called the trade agreement with China “very important,” due to China’s economic strength. “For a long time, El Salvador had been isolated from that potential.”
