Deaths under the provisions of what is called under the euthanasia euphemism “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAiD) have been increasing every year in Canada: from 4,480 in 2018, to 5,661 in 2019, to 7,603 in 2020, to over 10,000 last year. Approximately 3% of all deaths in Canada last year were brought on through the MAiD provisions.

The procedure is not limited to those with painful and incurable conditions. Its use is increasing among those in poverty with miserable living conditions due to their economic

means rather than physical or mental health.

A prohibition on considering mental illnesses as a grievous and irremediable condition will expire in March 2023, after which mental illness will qualify for MAiD.

Simons, a Canadian department store, has created a three-minute advertisement glamorizing a woman’s end of life, with beautiful imagery, fond farewells with friends, and the conclusion “All Is Beauty.”

Will a new global paradigm of economic development replace anti-growth Green Malthusianism? Or will the increasing number of people consigned to poverty simply be encouraged to die?
