G20 Final Declaration May Be Elusive with No Agreement on Condemning Russia

When G20 ministers came together earlier this summer to formulate and draft a final document for the November Bali summit, they failed to come to any agreements at all. Now, Indonesia is struggling to figure out how to pull all the members together, with Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo apparently considering it “a personal success” if a final G20 declaration can be agreed upon at all. The reports are that Widodo is urging “flexibility” to the various leaders so as to accomplish this.

According to an article in Politico on Nov. 13, unnamed sources are saying that Indonesian President Widodo is asking the guests to refrain from attacking Russia, in the hopes of getting Russia to sign the final declaration. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will head the Russian delegation to the G20 meeting, which will be held Nov. 15-16 in Indonesia. According to Politico, Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, and China don’t want to condemn Russia in the final declaration.
