Global Times Shows Taiwan People Desire Peace Above All Else

The semi-official Chinese daily Global Times authored an editorial on the recent Taiwan elections, which saw a sweeping defeat of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and large victories for the KMT. The editorial simply says that overall the Taiwanese population didn’t respond well to the pro-secessionist orientation of the DPP, and are more concerned with “expectations for peace and stability.” The increase in tensions in the recent months, especially since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit in August, have brought the reality of their situation more to the fore. “The DPP’s unrestrained political manipulation has made many Taiwan people have a more intuitive understanding of the danger of ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionists,” they write. “People have seen that very few on the island support ‘Taiwan independence” forces.’”
