UN Human Rights Commission Calls Video Evidence of Murder of Russian POWs ‘Authentic’

The evidence of war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces appears to be getting harder to ignore. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk issued a statement yesterday that the Commission believes that the video evidence of the massacre of Russian soldiers who had surrendered in Makiivka in mid-November appears authentic.

“Our Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has conducted a preliminary analysis indicating that these disturbing videos are highly likely to be authentic in what they show. The actual circumstances of the full sequence of events must be investigated to the fullest extent possible, and those found responsible appropriately held to account,” said Türk. “The analysis the Mission has done to date underlines the need for independent and detailed forensic investigations to help establish exactly what happened.

“We understand the Ukrainian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the events in Makiivka,” Türk said further. “It is essential that all allegations of summary executions are investigated fully in a manner that is—and is seen to be—independent, impartial, thorough, transparent, prompt and effective.”
