Fed Emergency Team Sent to New Mexico Hospital, as Shrinking U.S. Hospital System Can’t Cope with Peak Need

Today at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital, a federal emergency medical team of 14, which just arrived some days ago, has begun to provide help. The staffing aid was dispatched when the facility went over 100% capacity, and even with contingency measures, could not cope. Earlier this month, a tent was set up on the UNM Children’s Hospital property to triage adult patients.

The team, which includes nurses and others of various specialties, was sent by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra sent a letter to governors Dec. 2, offering to deploy help when needed, through the HHS National Disaster Medical System (NDMS). The help is extremely important.
