French President Emmanuel Macron restated, today, the need for a guarantee of long-term security for Russia. In an interview today with TF1 and LC1 channels, he declared: “The day of peace will involve discussions. First and foremost for guarantees to Ukraine, for its territorial integrity, its long-term security. But also for Russia, as a party that it will be to an armistice and peace treaty.”
Macron had, earlier in December, put forward that Russia is concerned that NATO “comes right up to its doors, and the deployment of weapons that could threaten Russia.” Hence, NATO needs to take into account that a “security guarantee” is essential for Russia. However, one would have thought he belched at the dinner table. The leaders of Poland, the Baltic states, and Slovakia erupted in protest over the mere mention of such an idea.
