In an interview with Germany’s second national public television ZDF, Munich Security Conference Chairman Christoph Heusgen said that to safeguard itself against the nuclear threat from Russia, creating a European nuclear umbrella “must no longer be a taboo subject.” Germany should open up on France’s offer to negotiate participation in French nuclear weapons, Heusgen said, adding, “We should take up this offer and make it a European project that allows British participation.”
“If the U.S. focuses more on Asia, and Europe has to take care of its own security, this should no longer be a taboo subject,” Heusgen said. In earlier interviews, Heusgen had already proposed substantial deliveries of heavy weapons, such as main battle tanks, to Ukraine.
