President López Obrador Restates Mexico’s Policy of Neutrality toward Russia

In a Dec. 27 response to a question from the Sputnik correspondent in Mexico, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said: “We do not allow being told with whom we can maintain relations and with whom not.” He added that he hoped the Russia-Ukraine conflict would be resolved peacefully, because “wars are irrational, they cause misfortune, pain, sadness, migration, economic crisis. It is the most irrational thing there can be.”

AMLO then sharply criticized the UN, recalling that he had sent his own peace proposal to the UN many months ago (calling for UN Secretary General Guterres, Indian Prime Minister Modi and the Pope to help mediate), but that he has still gotten no response.

“But they haven’t done anything! The performance of the UN is a bit unfortunate; it’s paralyzed, immobile, captured, when it should be searching for peace.”

AMLO also went after the great powers involved in the conflict. “They should act responsibly. They shouldn’t be feeding the war, they shouldn’t be sending arms, as the hegemonic powers are doing.”

Asked if Joe Biden’s upcoming Jan. 9 visit to Mexico will affect relations with Russia, AMLO said that would not happen. Furthermore, the Ukraine issue is not even part of the prepared agenda. “Mexico is neutral and is a free and independent country that has relations with all countries in the world. We maintain friendly relations with all countries in the world.”
