German Industry Reduces Gas Consumption 14%; Cuts Production

Gas consumption in Germany was down sharply in the crisis year of 2022. Compared with the average over the past four years, natural gas consumption fell by 14%, announced Germany’s Bundestnetzagentur, or Federal Network Agency regulator of electricity, gas, telecommunications, post and railway. Industry “saved” 15% compared to previous years, while private households and businesses reduced their consumption by 12%. Reduction of energy consumption by industry implies that production has been cut by almost the same percentage, with the respective consequences for jobs.
