On January 24, at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock argued that European countries “are fighting a war against Russia, and not against each other.” However, when fighting a proxy war, one is not supposed to state the obvious.
Baerbock indicated that mistakes happen and that’s life. When asked to clarify whether Germany was at war with Russia, in an interview with Der Tagesspiegel newspaper, published yesterday, she took the opportunity to make her denial. But her explanation did not help her very much. Her previous statement had to be contextualized. She explained that Moscow was attacking “our European peace order.” At the Assembly, Germany was being criticized for not moving quickly with tanks. “That’s why I made it clear that we do support Ukraine in its self-defense.”
