Consortium News Editor in Chief Joe Lauria interviewed Seymour Hersh on CN Live TV network today about his Feb. 8 article on the Nord Stream sabotage. Much of what he said has already been reported before, but widespread video coverage is crucially important. There were a few remarks that are worth mentioning. Hersh makes the point that Biden was simply given the option for the operation, told it could be done, but was not a mastermind. Hersh said he will be writing more about the mechanism and the planning later.
Politically, Hersh reflected on how easy it would have been to communicate to Russia that we have no plans to bring Ukraine into NATO, so as to avoid provoking the war. He called the current American government unbelievably “dumb,” to carry out all this escalation on Russia’s border, and to think that Ukraine could win the war. Then, add to that blowing up major strategic pipelines, part-owned and built, and terminating in Germany. When Biden made the decision to do it, “he basically blew off NATO and Europe.”
Asked if he has any hope that Congress will take up his story, especially with some of the Republican opposition to the war in Ukraine, he simply said “No.”
Hersh was also asked about the potential British role, as Russia has stated, and he responded “I don’t know.” He then added that, by default, the Brits have been in the water longer than anyone, so they might have given some advice here or there, but overall it was an American operation.
