A large demonstration of some 50,000 people gathered in front of the Danish Parliament today. Denmark is trying to abolish a holiday which dates back to 1686, known as National Prayer Day, because the government thinks that the extra tax revenue from making it a work day can be thrown into the military budget and help bring it up to 2% of GDP by 2030. The narrow majority coalition government, coveting $542 million equivalent in extra military budget money, “says it intends to push the bill through regardless of any opposition,” according to the London Daily Mail which ran pictures of the demonstration.
