China Responds to UN Security Council Failing To Support Russian Call for Independent Nord Stream Investigation

“What is the U.S. afraid of,” asked Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at her daily press conference today, with regard to Russia’s proposal for an international investigation of the Nord Stream sabotage. “The U.S. is usually enthusiastic about investigating developing countries, yet it has been hesitant to do so on an incident that seriously threatens international peace and security. This is a double standard.”

The Russian resolution would have called on the UN Secretary-General to create an independent international investigation into the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines.

China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN told reporters on Monday that an “international investigation will not be [in] conflict with national ones currently underway.”
