What was called an “informal” meeting of the European Union defense ministers was held between March 7 and 8 in Sweden. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov also participated. According to the official statement on the website of the Swedish EU presidency, the ministers discussed the EU’s military support to Ukraine, especially the training of the Ukrainian armed forces by the EU’s assistance mission to Ukraine. The mission commanders provided a status update at the meeting. They also discussed financing the procurement of artillery ammunition.
Sputnik reports that EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for the supply of weapons and ammunition from national stockpiles, arguing that, since the EU countries are not at war, they don’t need them.

Why is it dangerous?” He might have added, “Happily it is the Ukrainians who are dying for the EU’s geopolitical games and not citizens of the EU.” He even proposed a plan: “I presented a proposal…. We are talking about weeks [before starting the supplies], so we need to use what we already have,” Borrell stated, adding that around 1 billion euros could come from the budget of the “Peace Facility.” A total of about 2 billion euros, just for ammunition, was discussed.
Demonstrating that the EU is just an annex to NATO, the latter’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, also attended the meeting.
