General Strike in Greece Protesting the ‘Crime of Tempi’

The streets and squares of Greece’s cities today were again turned into rivers of protest, as tens of thousands took to the streets to demand justice for the victims of the “crime of Tempi"—as last month’s deadly train crash is being called. Organized by the railway unions, the strike is supported by the public sector (ADEDY) and private sector (GSEE) union federations. All public transportation has been shut down, including railways, ships, and airports. The strike is supported also by the students and various social organizations throughout the country. Schools were closed on Thursday as both students and teachers supported the strike. Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Syntagma Square in front of the Hellenic Parliament. Large demonstrations took place in Thessaloniki, Patras, Chania, and many other cities throughout the country.

The slogans written on banners and shouted by the demonstrators include: “Together with society, we demand Mass Transportation that is worthy of the passenger, that is worthy of the worker because transportation is a social good in the services of the citizen. NEVER AGAIN TRAGEDY. NEVER AGAIN,” among others.
