Andrej Hunko, a member of the German Bundestag and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said that the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines is a kind of economic warfare, not only against Germany but also the EU, in an interview with Global Times reporter Li Aixin, published on March 23. Hunko stressed, it is important to have a critical view and to get to the bottom of it. (https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202303/1287852.shtml )
The two Nord Stream pipelines, extending underneath the Baltic Sea from St. Petersburg to Greifswald, Germany, were to bring natural Russian gas to the EU. The first set of two pipelines, known as Nord Stream 1, was in operation, but geopolitics prevented the second set, Nord Stream 2, which had been completed in September 2021, majority owned by Gazprom, and minority owned by German, Swiss and other entities, from being brought into operation. On Sept. 26, 2022, explosives destroyed the pipelines off the Danish island of Bornholm.
