Al-Monitor states that: “It’s hard to overstate the impact of resumed diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia—and that it was China that made it happen. It’s a major step to de-escalate the most critical fault line between the Gulf’s largest and most powerful countries.”
“China’s role in facilitating the agreement was a surprise for many, since it had never played such a role in the region’s diplomacy,” acknowledges the Hindustan Times.
“This adds to a perception of Chinese power and influence around the world, and it contributes to a narrative of a shrinking U.S. global presence,” said Jon Alterman at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres issued a statement expressing “appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for hosting these recent talks and for promoting dialogue between the two countries.”
