Warsaw is now moving on sending some of its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. “Firstly, literally within the next few days, we will hand over, as far as I remember, four aircraft to Ukraine in full working order,” Polish President Andrzej Duda told a news conference yesterday, reported Reuters. “The rest are being prepared, serviced,” he added. The “rest” could be as many as ten more aircraft.
Olena Kondratiuk, Vice-President of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, unicameral parliament, effusively thanked Duda for the jets. “We believe and expect that other countries that have such aircraft will follow this decisive action and the example of a real application to defend the Ukrainian sky. Thank you, Mr. President! Thank you brothers and sisters Poles!” she exclaimed, reported the Polish press agency PAP.
The government of Slovakia followed Poland by announcing today that it would be transferring 13 Mig-29s in its possession to Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters this morning that these jets will have no effect on Russia’s special military operation. “Certainly, supplies of these aircraft, as we have repeatedly said, cannot impact the special military operation, but they may cause more suffering to Ukraine itself and to the Ukrainian people,” he said.
